Large-format tile (24×24 and larger) is the dominant choice in lake home renovation for its clean look and minimal grout lines. Larger tiles require a flatter, more carefully prepared substrate and medium-bed mortar installation — shortcuts here cause lippage and bond failures. We assess substrate flatness before tile selection so you're not choosing a format your floor can't support.
Can tile be installed outdoors at a lake home?
Yes, but outdoor tile at the Lake of the Ozarks must be specified for freeze-thaw exposure — a tile rated for exterior use with low water absorption, proper movement joints throughout the installation, and exterior-rated mortar and grout. Improperly installed outdoor tile cracks within one or two winters. We handle the specification and installation correctly.
How do you fix a tile floor that is cracked or hollow-sounding?
Hollow tile indicates bond failure between the tile and substrate. Cracked tile often indicates substrate movement or insufficient mortar coverage. Both require removing the affected area and reinstalling over a corrected substrate. We assess the root cause before proposing a repair approach so the new installation doesn't repeat the same failure.
