Proper winterization before the property sits vacant is the most reliable protection. This includes draining supply lines, blowing out the system, and turning off the main. For properties with heat kept on, pipe insulation in unconditioned spaces and smart leak detectors with automatic water main shutoffs provide a strong second line of defense.
